Auckland's waterside location has fostered the locals' love affair with the sea, earning this place the nickname 'City of Sails'. Auckland sprawls over a narrow isthmus between the sparkling waters of the Waitemata and Manukau Harbours. A cloak of rainforest covers the surrounding hills, dozens of dormant volcanic cones dot the landscape and enchanting holiday islands are scattered throughout the vast Hauraki Gulf. Two of the best island getaways are Waiheke Island and Great Barrier Island. Auckland's heart beats to a Polynesian rhythm, its people a melting pot of European, South Pacific and Asian cultures and a strong indigenous Maori heritage. This diversity brings with it an abundance of unique dining and shopping experiences. Auckland's temperate climate, easy access to the coast and variety of activities earn the city consistent top five rankings in international lifestyle survey. |

Milford is by far the best known of all of the fiords and the only one that can be accessed by road. It is approximately 16km from the head of the fiord to the open sea, which means visitors can comfortably travel the length of the fiord to open ocean and return on one of the many cruise options available in one and a half to two hours cruising time.
Travel along the coastal road with the towering mountains on your right and the Tasman Sea on your left. Climb over the Haast Pass and travel through dramatic mountain and forest scenery. Follow the shores of Lake Wanaka and journey through the Kawarau Gorge. Enjoy a visit to Arrowtown, a colourful township steeped in local history, before continuing to Fox Glacier. Stay at hotel in Fox Glacier.
We visit Hokitika, home of the native greenstone (jade), for a factory visit and jewellery demonstration first up. We travel through Greymouth, the largest town on the west coast, before heading back to Christchurch on the TranzAlpine Train over the spectacular Southern Alps and colourful Canterbury Plains to Christchurch.
